Synopsis

Mira Karnik is a CPA from Edison, New Jersey. Her father's print shop is drowning in debt when a proposal arrives from England: the Saxenas of Leicester, a sweet-shop dynasty, want no dowry and offer to clear the loan. On her wedding night Mira overhears her husband, Dev, on the phone: one year, then have the papers ready. Then the grandfather's will is played, recorded on cassette in instalments, and the bride's name is already on it: Mira Karnik of New Jersey. To find out why, she has to stay married for one year inside the family that once destroyed her own grandmother. The marriage was for a year. The debt was thirty-seven years old. This is a work of fiction; its people, shops and events are invented, and the legal details are simplified for the story.
